The Rotary Club of Griffin collaborated with the Griffin Spalding County School System for a new project this year: Destination Graduation. The project is designed to promote all students to graduate. The Rotary Club held pinning ceremonies at Spalding County’s two high schools. Every ninth grader pledged to stay in school to graduate and received a pin. To kick off the project, ninth grade students competed in an art contest to design the pins. A winning concept from each school was chosen.
Rotary also presented each ninth-grader with a discount card for the student to use at local businesses. By their participation, the local businesses recognized the students and encouraged them to stay in school. Participating businesses included Griffin Choral Arts (free admission to Requiem), Wise Guy's Wings (free dessert), O'Charley's (10% off), Griffith's Drive-in (free beverage), Margo's Restaurant (10% off), Blimpie's ($1.00 off combo), Serendipity (10% off), American Pie (free butterballs), Franklin and Rosemary (10% off) and Just Chillin' ($1.00 off). This contributions from local businesses amount to an in kind contribution that is difficult to quantify.
The Rotary Club initially proposed this as a one-year project, but the leaders in the school system were so enthusiastic about the project that they requested that we make it a four-year project in order to track students for four years through high school.
The announcement for Destination Graduation sent to all Chamber of Commerce members in its weekly email blast.
