The Rotary Club of Griffin used a district grant to fund weekly tuition for five children from low income households to attend the Salvation Army Community Center for Boys and Girls afterschool program for the 26 week school term. The community center identified five qualifying children and awarded scholarships beginning with the start of the current school term.
Rotarians serve on the local advisory board to the Community Center and provide program input. In addition, Rotarians assist with student mentoring and help supervise special activities.
The goal of the program is to improve academic performance and high school graduation rates. The Afterschool program provides a safe and educational environment for 45 children each day. Students are served snacks and are tutored under the guidance of certified teachers with homework and school projects. They also participate in arts and crafts, physical education and other activities.
